Everything, everyone, totally. This is how, in a free translation from Latin, the title chosen for OMNIS can be understood, in which five of the founding members of NARRATIVA present distinct but complementary views on how photography relates to religion within the context of World Day of Youth that took place in Lisbon, between August 1st and 6th, 2023.
In a complex contemplative exercise, which at times exudes satire and irony but also denotes the emotion and empathy experienced during those sunny August days, Inês Ventura, Maria Beatriz de Vilhena, Rodrigo Vargas, Francisco Romão Pereira and Mário Cruz mingle among the millions of participants in this unprecedented event in Portugal and dare to put into perspective what symbolizes the universe of the Church in their imagination.
Hustling crowds as far as the eye can see in what can be described as an exodus of biblical proportions; the spoils left behind after six days of intense sharing of faith; the records of mundane scenes that are confused with contemplative sequence shots of cinema – the images displayed on the pages of this notebook are the final product of an exercise in observation of an event that brings together millions of people around a belief and fidelity that they are not tangible, measurable or hardly materializable.
OMNIS takes a scathing look at the hidden side of the Church, at its half-open doors and those that remain closed, at its controversies, but also at its power in Western society. What is faith? How does it materialize? What is authorial practice? These are questions that the authors face, but for which they only intend to provide the reader with small visual clues, susceptible to the most varied interpretations.
Just like the common faith of the millions of believers who flocked to Lisbon for World Youth Day, the five authors share a photographic practice governed by collective codes that, in a stripped-down way, can be analogous to what unites believers around religion. Each individual has a way of relating to photography and putting their faith into practice. The same occurs with the authorial vision of the photographers represented here: each one recreates a reality that can be subject to countless readings. Everything, everyone is able to observe and to reflect.

Tudo, todos, totalmente. Assim pode ser entendido, numa tradução livre do Latim, o título escolhido para OMNIS, o primeiro projecto colectivo da NARRATIVA, em que cinco dos seus membros fundadores apresentam visões distintas, mas complementares, sobre como a fotografia se relaciona com a religião, tendo como cenário exploratório a Jornada Mundial da Juventude, que se realizou em Lisboa, entre 1 e 6 de Agosto de 2023.
Num exercício contemplativo complexo, que ora exala sátira e ironia mas também denota a comoção e a empatia vividas durante aqueles dias soalheiros de Agosto, Inês Ventura, Maria Beatriz de Vilhena, Rodrigo Vargas, Francisco Romão Pereira e Mário Cruz imiscuem-se entre os milhões de participantes deste evento inédito em Portugal e ousam pôr em perspectiva, o que simboliza o universo da Igreja nos seus imaginários.
Multidões atabalhoadas a perder de vista no que pode ser descrito como um êxodo de proporções bíblicas; os despojos que ficam para trás depois de seis dias de intensa partilha de fé; os registos de cenas mundanas que se confundem com planos-sequência contemplativos do cinema – as imagens dispostas nas páginas deste caderno são o produto final de um exercício de observação sobre um evento que reúne milhões de pessoas em torno de uma crença e de uma fidelidade que não são palpáveis, mensuráveis ou tão pouco materializáveis.
OMNIS elabora um olhar contundente sobre o lado oculto da Igreja, sobre as suas portas entreabertas e as que permanecem fechadas, sobre as suas polémicas, mas também sobre o seu poder na sociedade ocidental. O que é a fé? Como se materializa? O que é a prática autoral? Estas são questões com que os autores se deparam, mas para as quais pretendem apenas dotar o leitor de pequenas pistas visuais, susceptíveis das mais variadas interpretações.
Tal como a fé comum aos milhões de crentes que acorrem a Lisboa para a Jornada Mundial da Juventude, os cinco autores partilham uma prática fotográfica regida por códigos colectivos que, de forma despojada, pode ser análoga ao que une os crentes em torno da religião. Cada indivíduo tem uma forma de se relacionar com ela e de pôr em prática a sua fé. O mesmo ocorre com a visão autoral dos fotógrafos aqui representados: cada um recria uma realidade sujeita a inúmeras leituras. Tudo, todos estão aptos a observar e a reflectir.
